When we read a story, we inhabit it.
Today we started a Soundcloud account to house all of the audio stories we collected related to the pandemic. As a photographer, there’s something that draws me to portraiture. You can capture a person’s likeness, and even personality, in a photograph. But, someone’s voice and how they form words also tells so much about who they are and what they’ve experienced. I was fortunate enough that the participants in our project gave me a chance to photograph them and record their voices. In so many ways, as Berger says, “the story's voice makes everything its own.”
On Storytelling
“When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own.”—John Berger
